Improving Water Quality in the Jerrabomberra Creek Catchment

Molonglo Conservation Group is pleased to partner with the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Australian River Restoration Centre and the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment to bring this workshop series to the Jerrabomberra Creek Catchment. The workshop is part of the Erosion Control through Practical Workshops and Native Seed Collection for Revegetation projects funded through the 2019 Communities Environment Program.

This is a hands-on workshop series tour that focuses on tools to manage water quality and biodiversity in our freshwater streams. It will include:

  • Overview of water quality and catchment management – Jerrabomberra Wetlands
  • Seed collection workshop – Narrabundah Wetlands
  • Revegetation workshop – terrestrial and aquatic plantings – Jerrabomberra Grasslands
  • Erosion control workshop including the addition of structural complexity to streams – Jerrabomberra Grasslands

These workshops will provide community group members with the practical knowledge and skills to undertake water quality and biodiversity improvement works around the Canberra region.

What you need to bring: Sturdy waterproof shoes, appropriate clothing (rain, cold, sun) water bottle, sunscreen (we will provide morning tea and lunch)

Presenters:

Lori Gould

Lori is the Australian River Restoration Centre’s Rivers of Carbon Program Manager. Lori specialises in riparian rehabilitation projects that focus Lori is practical, approachable and a great person to talk to about all things riparian. She is a skilled community practitioner and is always willing to share her experiences with others.

Stephen Bruce

Stephen currently works with ACT Parks and Conservation Servicwith a focus on seed and grassland restoration. Previous to this Stephen worked with Greening Australia for over 18 years. His experience includes, managing native seedbanks, plant nursery and revegetation projects.

Anthony Hart

Anthony has worked for ACT Parks and conservation service for the past 10 years as a Park Ranger with a focus on weed and pest management and Anthony completed a 4 year trade in horticulture and turf management and has worked at parliament house and other high profile locations. His true passion is the management of our natural environments.

Workshop Series Agenda

10.00am

Meet at Jerrabomberra Wetlands (Carpark at end of 2 Dairy Road, Fyshwick). Welcome to the Day.

10.15am

Welcome to Country.

10.25am

Walking tour to learn about catchment management and the importance of looking after creeks and rivers for water quality on-site and downstream.

11.00am

Travel to Narrabundah Wetlands (opp 98 Matina St, Narrabundah ACT 2604).

11.20am

Stephen Bruce, ACT Parks and Conservation Service will lead the seed collection workshop. We will then run through an overview of healthy waterways.

12.15pm

Travel to Jerrabomberra Grasslands (10423 Monaro Highway southbound).

12.30pm

Lunch and Launch of the Jerrabomberra Catchment Plan (Maree Gilbert, Ranger in Charge, ACT PCS).

1.00pm

Anthony Hart and Lori Gould will conduct a Revegetation Workshop which includes hands-on planting of terrestrial and aquatic plants to improve biodiversity, slow flow and improve water quality.

2.00pm

Lori Gould and Anthony Hart will show how in-stream works can be used to reduce erosion and improve water quality (revegetation and implementation of structural works). Participants will assist with the hands-on construction of a rock riffle and planting of native aquatic plants (water level permitting).

3.00pm
